De Skoot spans 10 hectares of nature and water storage area near Opperdoes. It contains 2 restored windmills, ‘Bosmanmolens’, for managing the water level. Parallel to the natural sanctuary, you'll find a recreational cycling and hiking trail.
The area is still young. But during spring, the natural water level progression creates muddy banks and little islands alongside the 3 bodies of water. Migrating waders use this area for foraging. The avocet, little ringed plover and lapwing like to breed here. And as the swamp area gains in size over time, the water shrew, water rail and Savi's warbler feel right at home as well.
